Popcorn Brain: Why So Many Leaders Can’t Focus Anymore (And What To Do About It)

There’s something I’m noticing more and more in the leaders I work with.

They’re not lacking intelligence.
They’re not lacking capability.

They’re lacking focus.

Not because they don’t care…
But because their brains have been trained not to.

I call it Popcorn Brain.

That feeling where your thoughts jump rapidly…
like popcorn in a hot pan.

Ping. Scroll. Idea. Email. Notification.

And before you know it - you’re mentally exhausted,
but haven’t actually done any deep thinking.

What’s really happening?

We’ve conditioned ourselves into this.

Every:

  • scroll

  • swipe

  • notification

  • short video

gives us a small hit of dopamine. And over time, we start craving the next hit.

So we check our phones without thinking.
We jump between tasks.
We lose the ability to sit with one idea long enough to develop it.

And now - with AI entering the workplace…

We’re outsourcing thinking as well.

Which means something deeper is being lost and our ability to think clearly, deeply and independently.

Why this matters for leaders

Leadership isn’t built in the scroll.

It’s built in:

  • reflection

  • presence

  • considered thinking

When your attention is fractured:

  • your decision-making becomes reactive

  • your conversations become surface-level

  • your team feels your distraction

You can’t create clarity… from a scattered mind.

What I’ve learned (the hard way)

Clarity doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from removing the noise.

For me, it’s my morning bush walk.

No phone.
No input.
Just space.

And in that space?

The thinking comes back.

Simple ways to reset your focus

You don’t need a complete life overhaul.

Just small, intentional shifts:

🌱Get into nature
Even 20 minutes changes your state

🔕Turn off non-essential notifications
Protect your attention like it matters (because it does)

📵Schedule phone-free time
Create space for uninterrupted thinking

Work in focused blocks
40 minutes deep work → 10 minute reset

🧘Practice stillness
Yes, it will feel uncomfortable
That’s the point

For leaders

This isn’t just about you.

It’s about the culture you’re creating.

If you’re always:

  • distracted

  • reactive

  • “busy”

Your team will be too.

But if you model:

  • presence

  • clarity

  • focus

You give your team permission to do the same.

We don’t need more information.

We need more integration.

And that only happens…

When the noise stops.

I’m curious:Where do you go to quiet the noise?
